Trailer Review: Avengers: Endgame

For months now we have been anticipation of the new Avengers trailer. With many surrounding rumours and theories of the name and story of this film, there were certainly high expectations for this trailer. Considering that this trailer has broken records, being streamed 298 million times in 24 hours, it is no wonder how important this trailer was for the fanbase. The question is though, did they deliver?

The first thing to mention here is the name. There were many names floating around, from Annihilation to Infinity Gauntlet. The one we ended up getting, and the first big name to float around the circuit after the release of Infinity War, was Endgame. The Russo brothers admitted themselves that no matter what name they chose, everyone would be slightly disappointed due to the hype and mystery of not knowing the name for so long. I felt this way, but then again I am not sure what name would have been a better suit for this film. This is something we can only judge when the film is released.
Whilst this is a sort of teaser for a trailer, I really love this trailer. Yes, it is a sort of prologue for what will happen in the film, but that is exactly what Marvel needed to do here. They know that as a fanbase we are already booking our tickets for this blockbuster, but they just wanted to remind people of the events of the last film and announce a couple of new things. Firstly the name of the film, but also the fact that it is now been pushed forward a week to show at the end of April. This is the exact same strategy they used for Infinity War, and it clearly worked out well for that film.
The shots we see in this film are well structured and used. Whilst we do not give us too much information, there are still a ton of references and small details to look out for, whether it is seeing the people who are missing, or gathering a glimpse of what the environment and outside world looks like due to the events of the snap.

The star of the show in this trailer though has to be Hawkeye, partaking in the role of Ronin. If you are not a comic book reader and are not aware of the character of Ronin, he is a Samurai warrior that goes out and fights alone, and Hawkeye was the second person to take on that persona in the comics. This not only looks great on Hawkeye and gives him an edge, but also hits harder when we hear Captain America say in the trailer that people lost family. Hawkeye’s character development has shown him be a true family man, and this can only hint that his entire family were dusted during the events of Infinity War.
All the big players are out in this trailer, and in particular we see a focus on Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Thor. This will potentially be the film that they pass their duties in the Avengers on to the new heroes of the MCU one way or another, whether it is retirement or death. There are still so many theories as to who will die and who will live, and the truth is that we will not know who will live or die until the film is out. However, it seems obvious that at least Captain America and Iron Man will finish up their main storylines here and with such a big role in the trailer alone, it’s going to be hard to say goodbye to them.

One of the new heroes that is proving to perhaps be a pivotal role in Avengers: Endgame is Ant-Man, and honestly that is a great move fro Marvel. Ant-Man was one of the highlights in Captain America: Civil War and his humour seems very much needed in comparison to the moods of all of the characters in the trailer. Whilst it is still unknown how he escapes the quantum realm, I am very much excited that he is going to be a big part of this film, and perhaps have the quantum realm be a part of the rescue plan. It now seems safe to say that fans should definitely check out Ant-Man and the Wasp to catch up, as it could be a factor in this upcoming film.

Whilst it is not a complaint or a major omission, I have to say that I was expecting to see a glimpse of Captain Marvel in the trailer. It is confirmed that she is in this upcoming film, and with her own movie out a month before Avengers: Endgame, it would have been a nice boost of promotion for the Captain Marvel film to show that she is perhaps vital for any plans or battles that occur in Avengers: Endgame. There may be spoiler-related reasons for not showing her, and that would make total sense.

This is pretty much the perfect trailer that Marvel could have put out for Avengers: Endgame. Marvel knows that the entire fanbase has now basically seen Infinity War and therefore spoilers are needed to get the message of this film across. I love how simple and beautifully edited this film is. We still get to see Thanos, but make it absolutely clear that this film is about the heroes and the recovery process of the previous film. They still gave us enough new information to leave the fans happy and this trailer has made me even more excited for Avengers: Endgame.

What did you make of the trailer? Did you expect to see more action, or are you glad they didn’t reveal all of their cards too early? Leave a comment down below.
