My Oscar Nomination Predictions

Today is finally the day of the Oscar nominations. Whilst due to University studies, I will not be able to live react to the nominees as they are announced, I do want to make a day of the event. I will be posting my thoughts, looking at the snubs, and see who the Oscars are favouring in a blog post tonight, but for now I would like to share who I think is going to be nominated in the major categories today.

Roma (2018) – source: Netflix

Best Picture
A Star is Born
The Favourite
Green Book
Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody

Normally, Best Picture has eight nominations. There seem to be nine in contention, so I have a feeling it will come down to If Beale Street Could Talk and Bohemian Rhapsody. However, with being a crowd pleaser as well as winning Best Picture: Drama at the Golden Globes, I am giving the edge to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born)
Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman)
Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)
Peter Farrelly (Green Book)

The first three are seeming to be locks, and it is down to the final two slots. However, The Favourite and Green Book are major contenders to win this year, and it will be odd if they are put in a position to win and not even have the director nominated.

A Star is Born (2018) – source: Warner Bros. Pictures

Best Actress
Glenn Close (The Wife)
Lady Gaga (A Star is Born)
Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns)

This category seems to be locked up, but I could see Blunt being replaced. I would love to see Toni Collette get a nomination for Hereditary, but I will be shocked if it does get nominated.

Best Actor
Christian Bale (Vice)
Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born)
Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)
Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)
Ethan Hawke (First Reformed)

The first four nominees are certainly locks here, but once again it comes down to the final slot. I am giving it to Hawke right now, but do not be shocked if John David Washington gets the final nomination for BlacKkKlansman.

The Favourite (2019) – source; Fox Searchlight

Best Supporting Actress
Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)
Amy Adams (Vice)
Emma Stone (The Favourite)
Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)
Claire Foy (First Man)

Despite how badly First Man has done in the major categories, I still believe that Foy will get a nomination here. This category seems to be the safest bet right now, and I do not see the Oscars doing anything different here.

Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman)
Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy)
Sam Rockwell (Vice)

There are six potential nominees for this category. Whilst it pains me not to put Sam Elliott here for A Star is Born, these are the five that have consistently been nominated throughout the season and are the safest bet.
