The news has just broken in the past few hours that DC has officially released the release date for the newest Batman blockbuster. Simply titled The Batman, this film will be released on the 25th of June 2021. This will be directed by Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield) and it has indeed been confirmed that Ben Affleck will not be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne. So, what does this news mean for DC and the break from the DCEU?

It has been reported for the past few weeks that DC were wanting to move away from the shared universe. This came around the time where Aquaman was nearing the $1 billion box office mark, and it has since then passed that to be the highest grossing DC movie of all time. DC seems to be on a high, and with Shazam! being their next film, released in a few months time, it seems like DC is finally back to producing high quality films and getting rewarded for it.
However, I do find it suspicious that this news is dropped by DC around this time. They are currently in the process of advertising the new Birds of Prey movie, lead by Margot Robbie as the iconic Harley Quinn. I personally hated the early promo that they have released, and I know a lot of people think the same as me. I feel like this is leading us as movie fans to talk about DC in a positive way and forget about the early promos done by the marketing team behind the Birds of Prey movie.
It also seems clear that Ben Affleck is heading in the same direction as Henry Cavill. It seems obvious that we will not get a third Superman movie with Cavill, and now we may not get another appearance from Affleck as Batman. By leaving the two main actors in the past, they are truly starting a refresh on the DCEU. It was clear that the vision wasn’t communicating for a mainstream audience, looking at Batman v. Superman and Justice League, and it is smart of DC to move away from it.
What I am questioning is what direction this new Batman film will go in. We are getting a movie titled The Joker nearer the end of this year, and this new Batman movie has the exact same title format as the Joker film. This could be more of a Dark Knight style of movie, which goes back to being dark and serious, which I would love for DC to do. Where they shine is their dark stories and gritty style, and I believe they would do very well if they do go down a darker path. All we need to wait for now is to see who is going to play Batman, as that will be a first indication on to what tone they are taking the movie.
Are you optimistic about this new Batman movie? Are DC doing the right thing, or should they try and focus on promoting their closer releases? Let me know in the comments below.
