In a time where people are complaining that franchises are being rebooted and overdone, we have a trailer for yet another reboot of a franchise, this time in the name of Charlie’s Angels. The trailer dropped on the 27th of June 2019, and you can check it out below.
This reboot of Charlie’s Angels is written and directed by Elizabeth Banks, which is her second time directing after the success of Pitch Perfect 2. This reboot has a brand new cast attached, starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.
Naomi Scott is the stand out in this new trailer, and I am liking her more as an actress with everything I see her in. Her character seems to feel the most authentic and relatable, and I like that they are potentially going down this route instead of making every character fierce and strong from the start. This is going to lead for an interesting sub-plot surrounding Naomi’s character and how she fits into the rest of the team.
I am also genuinely pleased with how Kristen Stewart plays off her role in the trailer. She is finally getting a chance to shine outside of the Twilight franchise and she seems a lot more chilled out in this role. She seems to be pulling off her action sequences, which is a major plus for a film like this. The same can be said for Ella Balinska, who looks incredibly cool in this trailer.
I am not a fan of reboots, especially when they are female-driven. I did not like Ghostbusters (2016) at all, and I found Ocean’s 8 to be mediocre. However, I like that this adaptation is not changing the gender of the lead characters, but keeping it to be the same dynamic. There is still a guy named Charlie is charge, and I am glad they are sticking to that. This also feels like a franchise that never became known for one major, incredible film that should never be touched (like Ghostbusters or Men in Black), so I can be accepting of a reboot of this series.
If I have any worry, it’s about Elizabeth Banks. I adore her in franchises such as The Hunger Games and I enjoyed her work in Pitch Perfect 2, but that is because her characters allowed her to be a little bit out there. I would rather have a more serious, action based film here rather than a comedy or over-the-top characters.
Overall though, I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed this trailer. I am not setting my expectation too high for this film, but so far the marketing has gotten off to a good start.
