Trailer Reaction: Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed Jumanji when it was released in 2017. It was a fun experience and I was enthralled by the story. Now, it plans to do the same as it once again releases just in time for the holiday season. The trailer has just dropped and you can check it out below before I give my opinion on it.

First of all, I cannot wait to see the marketing campaign for this film. I think the subtitle of the film, The Next Level, is a great choice. I also love that they have started the campaign by getting Jack Black to promote it on his YouTube channel, Jablinski Games. Not only does he seem to be having fun with the campaign, but it will get more people invested in the marketing of the film.

The trailer sold me as soon as I saw that Dwayne Johnson’s character is basically playing Danny DeVito. Talk about a fun and inspired choice, something that many people are going to love to see. I also think it was a great choice to have Johnson and Kevin Hart play as two older people, as there is going to be an ongoing gag about them having healthier bodies, which I am already enjoying.

Jumanji: The Next Level also seems to be improving on the previous film, in terms of scale and action. The fighting sequences look better, the action sequences have so much more going on, and it seems that the stakes are going to be higher in this film. There also seems to be a storyline that moves from the previous entry to this one, meaning we get to follow the same main characters and their story. I like that it does not feel like the same story or narrative.

There are some things that I am worried about though, but it is early days. It seems like they are going to re-introduce the video-game characters in the same way, having the same formula of strengths, weaknesses and potentially hearts in the film. I get it for the sake of continuity, but I do not want to hear the same jokes over and over again.

I am also worried that they only showed the likes of Nick Jonas and Awkwafina for a split second, making them feel like side characters. Jonas showed potential in the last film, and as he is already known to the film I feel he should get a bit of a larger role in this film than beforehand. But, like I said, it’s all early days.

What did you make of this trailer? Did you like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and are you excited for this entry coming in winter? Let me know in the comments below and let’s have a discussion.
